From Donald Crowhurst to the Whitbread Round The World Yacht Race - Portishead Radio was there....

It was from the 1970s onwards that the station became a vital tool in the high-profile round the world and trans-Atlantic yacht races. In fact, the station provided dedicated links for many races in the 1980s, with staff visiting many of the competing yachts to advise on radio procedures and propagation.

The station also provided free one-day R/T familiarisation courses for yachtsmen and women who had installed HF radio equipment on board, which proved to be very popular, earning an RYA award in the process.
